Andrei Rublev

Andrei Rublev (1360s – c. 1430) is widely considered to be the greatest medieval Russian painter of Orthodox icons and frescoes. His teacher was Theophanes the Greek, a Byzantine artist who was born in Constantinople and later came to Russia. While a great example of the direct connection of Russian art to Byzantine culture, Rublev went in his own direction artistically as well. His work can be found in the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir.
